PLCs: What processes have you put in place that you find especially helpful in assuring effective PLCs? Norms? Expectations? Standing Agendas? Roles? Monitoring? Change in practices in classroom?

Two of the buildings in our district have been named model professional learning communities by Solution Tree via AllThingsPLC.info. This is not to suggest we've perfected the professional learning community idea, but instead to indicate we have been committed to this philosophy for over five years. There are plenty of agenda and norm templates available that we've used online. Perhaps the most powerful process we've put into place is asking each of teams to conduct an annual self-audit of their team's effectiveness as it relates to the professional learning community ideals. We have heavily modified sample continuums available in the latest edition of the book, Learning by Doing. Our local continuum is available here.

Matt, first of all congratulations on the recognition by Solution Tree. And, secondly, I really appreciate your sharing the continuum. I think it helps people understand what a novice team looks like and one that has "arrived." May Iowa ASCD have permission to put it on our page for PLCs? Lou
